Cal State East Bay Professor Preaches Hate in Shameful Display, Protest Ends in Violence

It is horrifying to see how far away from the ideals of Mahatma Gandhiji we have come. Look at what Professor Ortiz said in an Occupy Oakland rally:

“Passionate, organized hatred is the element missing in all that we do to try to change the world,” said Ortiz, a retired professor from Cal State East Bay. “Now is the time to spread hate, hatred for the rich.”

This is deeply wrong. Hatred is the father of violence. What is more important than ever is love of one’s enemies. Some people might quip, “Oh, that’s Christian.” No. It’s universal. The Buddha also taught love for one’s enemies. The proper response to hate is love and compassion. The proper response to violence is generosity or at least stillness.

Gandhi did not profess passivity. He was very active and his philosophy was to be provocative, to provoke a response. He put the opponent in the position of doing their usual brutality. But his genius that freed a subcontinent while reasserting India as the spiritual heartbeat of the world was to take their blows and give none back. He had onlookers from the media document the scene of wolves tearing apart the lambs to the shock and horror of the international community. His movement can only be described as nonviolent warfare, where the nonviolent protesters were more than willing and prepared to become a casualty of their disobedience.

A social revolution can have no credibility if those protesters are not willing to sacrifice their own bodies with the discipline to inflict no harm upon another. The power of non-violent protest is to garner the public sympathy and to allow the opposition to humiliate themselves, to scorn themselves, to shun themselves. The movement cannot grow unless newcomers can have confidence in their moral superiority over the oppressors. It cannot have a lasting impact throughout the generations unless it reaches up to the highest angels of human consciousness.

Shame on Professor Ortiz. Shame on Occupy Oakland for inflicting injuries upon the police. That movement has become an outrage. What is needed is a Gandhi figure who is willing to starve himself until people calmed down.

But 21st Century America is not India. Gandhi was regarded as more than a leader. He was looked upon as an avatar. His hunger strikes struck fear into the hearts of violent protesters. They feared hell for their actions. In this irreligious time, moral relativism has engendered a lawless tendency in people.

Deep down everyone protesting wants to be free and wants that freedom to be a great blessing. They want to be spiritually uplifted, and for their acts of protest to have the zing of divinity. Deep down protesters want to be part of something noble and right. They want to embody truth, the nectar of the gods. Not the demonic poisons of hatred and blood lust.

Everyone must take a vow of non-violence. If not, this movement will fail, and soon.

    More Client Testimonials

    Hello Mr Puri,

I have been following the case with the family and your tweets. I would like to express on behalf of my family and myself our heartfelt gratitude for all the hard work and efforts you have been putting into my brothers case and most especially the trial.

Your passion and belief with the jury in trying to bring the truth out and justice this past week has shown how much you care for the life of someone who deserves to be free and to live a full life as he is intended to.

We chose you after endless website searches, we were lost and  desperate. Based on a gut feeling my sister Melva had we went for broke, literally. I truly believe you were a godsend for my brother and my family and were the right choice.

My brother may be a stubborn man and have different views on many subjects but underneath all that, he is kind, gentle and very loving. He is a good man. Thank you for being patient with him, I am quite sure you have faced many challenges with him because he is a very passionate person.

    Thank you again...

    Best Regards,

    Thelma Buccat Ibanez
